CENTENNIAL UPDATE
In February 1922, the Eden Rugby Football Club was formed, so it is fitting that we kick-off our centennial celebrations with a hundredth birthday party-bash on Saturday 26th February 2022. All club members are invited to this free of charge event to share stories of the past and to look forward to a great year of celebration. By winning the Auckland Club Sevens, the George Nicholson Cup and the coveted Gallaher Shield in our 99th year, these were amazing accomplishments and a great way to “to get the ball rolling“.
Centennial registration will be available before Christmas.... some final details are to be worked out in the coming fortnight. Check out our website or Facebook for updates, ordering of centennial merchandise, Eden stories, registration info, and centennial shield involvement.
The four month lockdown prevented the committee on checking “outside” venues for our Queen’s Birthday Weekend celebratory dinner with a guest-speaker and the auction of our special Premier-playing jerseys. The Friday 3rd June Centennial dinner venue will be announced mid-December.
Saturday 4th June our Development and Prem teams will play at home, and the special after-match function will be another opportunity for past and present supporters to mix n’ mingle, share your stories, and enjoy refreshments with a complimentary grazing-table. Come down to the Gribbledome and support the George Nicholson and Gallaher Shield holders. Opposition is yet to be known, but we not afraid of any club !
It is planned to hold a Golden Oldies mini-tournament on Sunday the 5th and there is a possibility of a game between a MAGS invitational team verse an Eden Invitational team. It does depend on the season draw over QB Wknd which won’t be known until March 2022. MAGS also celebrate their 100th next year, and it just so happens, as does the playing for the Gallaher Shield! Saturday and Sunday's events are free of charge.
A beautiful swamp Kauri shield is in make, and it will decorate a clubroom-wall. One hundred sponsors of a $100 donation each are sought to sponsor the Centennial Shield and their names (or business-name) will be scripted onto this shield. It will be a permanent reminder of Eden’s most staunch and loyal supporters. If you are interested, please email gm@edenrugby.co.nz now with your details, thank you.
Recent committee additions have evened up the existing age spectrum of the centennial committee. Welcome, Declan Bannon and Nathan Mataroa, bringing your younger and fresh ideas.
Lastly, we are keen to hear your feedback on the possible addition of this ring as a centennial item piece availabe to be purchased. If you want to know more about it or would like to regsiter your interest, email Drys on edenrugby1922@gmail.com
